Oval Room Blue is my most popular, most requested blue. The owner of this hutch requested it for her hutch. To be honest, when she sent me pictures of this old country-looking thing, I cringed.
Oval Room Blue On A Country Chic Hutch
It had all the ingredients of dated and ugly. On top of that, it was bulky, it had this orange knotty pine look (although it was not pine), and it had that shiplap-looking background.
I mean, I could see how it could be transformed with paint, but honestly, I had many doubts about this one.
The orange, dark wood finish with knots is a great finish in a farmhouse, but my client didn’t live in a farmhouse.
The dark wood combined with thick, chunky legs and thick doors made the hutch look bulky. It was bulky, but still.
The shiplap back is great, again, for farmhouse decor. Not only that, but lacquer does not look good on a textured surface.
The beauty of lacquer is in the smooth shine, and textured surfaces don’t allow for that. The back had to be replaced. Just a simple, plain, paint-grade back does the job.
Introducing – Oval Room Blue
According to Farrow and Ball’s Website Oval Room Blue is a
A darkened historic blue
Oval Room Blue is the most blackened of our blues, giving it a subtly aged feel. Named after the attractively shaped rooms of the late 18th century, it sits perfectly with our popular greys to create depth and balance in either a hall or a darker, cosier family room.
In my opinion, it’s a muted, grayed-out blue that has a bit of warmth to it. It’s a very pretty yet complex blue.
The complexity of Farrow and Ball colors adds so much interest and makes the color look completely different in different lighting conditions.
Polished Brass Hardware With Lapis Lazuli
I am a fan of shiny, polished brass, not a fan of 80s ugly brass. The kind of brass I am talking about is modern, un-lacquered, warm brass.
I love Modern Matter’s brass hardware. It’s un-lacquered polished brass that will develop a warm brown patina. The hardware we chose for her hutch was a combination of backplates and big chunky knobs with lapis lazuli in it.
Blue on blue is a fine idea. Also, the monochromatic color scheme is easy on the eyes. The large brass backplates with large lapis stones make a big statement.
The once-country chic hutch is now a glossy, glamorous focal point, painted oval room blue and accented with gleaming gold hardware, and the lapis gemstone is just a cherry on top.
It’s makeover perfection, if you ask me!
Final Thoughts
Choosing an upscale, muted blue color definitely helped this piece look elevated and elegant. It’s really hard to find a large piece of furniture that’s well-made. They are almost always worth saving.
